Contempt For Parliament: Gillard Emulates Rudd

Yet more faux-civility triumphalism and hubris in Canberra today:

The federal Opposition walked out on a vote it had called today as Parliament descended into chaos and acrimony following the passing of the Government's legislation dismantling Work Choices.

The trouble, which became a series of shouting matches between the government's manager of business Anthony Albanese and his Liberal counterpart Joe Hockey, started as soon as the legislation was passed.

Deputy Prime Minister and Workplace Relations Minister Julia Gillard took the unusual course of moving a motion which celebrated the end of Work Choices. Mr Hockey tried to gag her, his move failing on party lines.

More logical for a "Labor" government would be a motion celebrating the Howard government's restoration of full employment after Paul Keating's Great Recession. "I can't believe this person is Deputy Prime Minister," observed Mr Hockey. That may be as high as she ever flies.
